Anti-terrorist 'snot' spray developed for US military

Inventors have created a spray-on slime for the US military which makes it impossible to walk on any surface.

They say the 'mobility denial system' is a 'snotty' substance which can be sprayed on roads, lawns or stairways. It can be used to make the floor slippery during riots and anti-terrorist operations.

Fox News reports that it was developed by scientists at San Antonio's Southwest Research Institute after a request by the US Marines. Tests on a lawn there proved that the gel can trip up a man or even stop a car because it forms an unbreakable liquid barrier with the ground's surface.

It is 95% water with a secret ingredient similar to the material soft contact lenses are made from . The inventors say it can be sprayed on to a surface from a back-pack or from a vehicle-mounted cannon and is effective for up to 12 hours.

It is environmentally friendly and once it dries out it can be swept away. If approved for use in the field the 'banana-skin in a can' could form part of the military arsenal by 2003.

Bill Mallow, a chemist for the project, says: "We spent about a year screening all kinds of slippery materials before we identified this combination of polymers. It's a very snotty material, like a garden snail."
