| Woman dies after car hits cow A woman has died after the car she was a passenger in hit a cow. Margaret Munden, 27, of Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, was crushed when her husband's Seat Cordoba hit the black cow which then rolled over the car roof. The accident happened at 2200 GMT on Friday on the east-bound carriageway of the A66 at Bowes Moor, near Barnard Castle, County Durham. A second vehicle, a Peugeot 306, following the Seat also struck the cow as it rolled over the top of the first car. Minor injuries Inspector Colin Nixon of Durham Police said: "The first car, a Seat Cordoba, struck the animal and sustained massive damage to the roof. "The cow then fell into the path of a second vehicle. "The cow went over the top of the first car and crushed the roof. "There is an awful lot of weight in a cow and she [the deceased] suffered the fatal injuries as it has rolled over the roof. "During the course of the investigation, police will be inquiring how the cow came to be on the road." The woman's husband was treated in Darlington Memorial Hospital for a gash to his head and hand and was later released. Three people in the second car were taken to the same hospital for minor injuries and were also released. 14th January 2002 |
