Nokia executive gets £71,500 speeding fine

A Nokia executive has been has been fined £71,500 for speeding on his motorbike in Finland.

Anssi Vanjoki was caught doing 17mph over the limit on his Harley Davidson in October. He has to pay the equivalent of 14 days of his 1999 income, £8m after selling share options.

The fine is thought to be the world's largest, The Times reports. The 44-year-old is now appealing on the grounds the share price of the world's largest mobile phone maker has plummeted, taking his income with it.

In August 2000 Jaakko Rytsola, a Finnish dot-com millionaire was fined £49,000 for zigzagging through Helsinki in his Ferrari. The fine was reduced on appeal last April to £82 because his wealth had been reduced.

Last September, Pekka Ala-Pietila, president of Nokia mobile phones, was fined £21,000 for driving through a red light.

In Britain, the maximum fine for speeding is £2,500 on a motorway and £1,000 on other roads.
