| Apologetic thief offers victim his phone to dial 999 A youth who threatened a woman with a knife apologised when she refused to hand over cash and told her to phone police on his mobile. Janet Fuller says she froze when he pulled out the 5in knife but ended up feeling sorry for him. Police in Cleethorpes say offenders normally wait until they've appeared in court before showing remorse. Mrs Fuller was walking to work when she was threatened by the youth, the Grimsby Telegraph reports. The boy, who is believed to be aged between 15 and 17, offered her his mobile phone and told her to dial 999. He ran off when she invited him to her office for a cup of tea. Mrs Fuller said: "When I saw the knife, my mind was in turmoil. He told me his name and that his brother had recently died. He said he was confused and didn't know what he was doing. In the end, I felt really sorry for him." PC Nigel Powell said the offender may have been a drug addict who used the incident as a cry for help. He said: "This offence is a total mystery and very unusual. I have never come across anything like this before." 16th January 2002 |
