| Naked jogger who led police on two-hour chase jailed A naked jogger in Australia who evaded 14 police officers for over two hours has been sent to jail for six months. Officers in the Victoria town of Shepparton eventually caught and arrested 35-year-old Gabriel Romanos. He pleaded guilty to willful and obscene exposure and resisting arrest at Shepparton Magistrates Court. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Ross Fifoot said Romanos admitted to the offences, telling officers: "I've just got a bad habit. I just have an urge." He told the court women and young children saw the naked runs over a three-day period. In his defence, lawyer Anthony Coote said Romanos' last offence was two years ago, and the number of his nude runs has diminished significantly since the early 1990s. He said psychoanalysts haven't been able to identify why he does it. "He is aware continuing behaviour like this will result in a jail sentence," Mr Coote said. "He said he believes if he had a female companion, behaviour like this would not continue and that is something he should consider when he gets out of jail." Magistrate John Murphy sentenced Romanos to nine months in jail with three months suspended for two years. 18th January 2002 |
