Deadly fun for lecturer on 50th birthday

A lecturer has decided that while life may begin at 40, his 50th birthday should be marked with a wake complete with a life-size effigy of himself in a coffin.

Adrian Sodo, who believes life is too serious, will go in disguise and mingle with friends at the party to mark "the end of his youth". Mr Sodo has not confirmed his costume but will go in disguise, possibly as a woman or an Arab. "I do not generally celebrate birthdays so every 10 years I really go to town," said the photography, art and design lecturer from Preston Road, Yeovil in Somerset.

The plywood coffin, designed by colleague Richard Apps at Yeovil College, has a lid with an in-built "tummy-bulge" to account for Mr Sodo's "beer belly".

Guests at the party, at Ivel Barbarians Rugby Club at Yeovil Showground, must wear black - ties for the men and an least one unspecified item for the women.

He denies that his choice of celebration is morbid. "Life is for living and there's no reason to stop people having fun. People who think it's morbid are missing the point and are sad," he said.

Looking on the bright side Mr Sodo, who is well-known locally where he is a DJ for a mobile disco and delights in pulling the legs of his friends, will now become an honorary member of the Old Gits' Club at his local pub, The Arrow.

His 22-year-old stepson Jason Legg, with whom he lives, says he is looking forward to having a "good laugh" at his stepfather's party.
