| Blind man identifies thief by smell A blind Romanian man has identified an alleged thief by his smell. Gheorghe Gruia gave a note worth £10 to the man to get him some food. The thief came back empty handed but handed back a note worth only £2. The 70-year-old went to police describing the thief's smell. Officers recognised the description as the town tramp. Police identified the tramp who hangs about the town of Drobeta Turnu Severin, reports the Editie Speciala newspaper. Police Major Teodor Mitroi said: "We found the thief in less than an hour. First he denied any accusations but when the money was found in his pocket he made no further comments and admitted everything. He is now under investigation. " "He has had nine other convictions for similar crimes before." The suspected thief is to appear before court. 27th January 2002 |
