| Artist to create work using her own blood An artist is creating a new piece of work using her own blood as paint. Kira O'Reilly will create 'Blood Wall Drawing I' at the Arnolfini gallery in Bristol next month. It is part of the gallery's Marked season exploring the ways in which artists have worked with their bodies. Ms O'Reilly will prepare for the work by having a small quantity of her blood drawn under strict medical supervision. Over two days, February 14 and 15, the Bristol-based artist will use her blood to paint lines into a grid of small squares created on two walls of the gallery with tape. On the following two days she will remove the grid and cover over the marks with white paint. Catriona Henderson, marketing manager at Arnolfini, described the work as "intimate and thoughtful" and said the blood had a "range of personal and symbolic meanings". She dismissed the idea it could be construed as "gory", but admitted under 16s would not be admitted to the gallery to view the work, unless accompanied by an adult. Ms Henderson said all visitors to the gallery would be warned about the work before entering, to allow them to make up their own minds about whether they wanted to see it. The Marked season, which runs until April, also includes performances, sculptures, photographs and film screenings by other artists from the last 40 years who have used their bodies as a "canvas" or as a material. 30th January 2002 |
