| Radio station fined for penis discussion A Seattle radio station has been fined for a live discussion on whether penises can be used to lift or pull objects. The Federal Communications Commission has fined KNDD-FM £10,000 ($14,000) for "willfully and repeatedly broadcasting indecent language". The station's owners said the morning show debate had been "consistent with contemporary community standards" and may appeal. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports a listener had complained about broadcasts on May 30 and June 1 last year. After the discussion, morning show staff then decided to give away concert tickets to listeners who agreed to appear in the studio and pull objects with their penis. Steve Oshin, Seattle vice president and market manager for Entercom Communications Corp, which owns and operates KNDD-FM, said the company is discussing the matter with its lawyers. According to the FCC, "Entercom contends that explicit discussions of male genitalia are common today on radio and television." The commission said the material met the tests of being explicit and patently offensive, meant to titillate or shock, and it was broadcast at a time when there was a reasonable risk children might have been listening. The FCC dismissed a complaint for material broadcast on the show May 31. 31st January 2002 |
