| Overweight police face pay cut if they don't lose pot bellies Police authorities in India have told overweight officers to lose their pot bellies or face losing a month's salary. Uttar Pradesh police chiefs say most officers can't fit behind their car wheels. They also say officers can't expect to cut crime if they're too fat to chase criminals on foot. Officers are unhappy at being asked to join exercise classes. Authorities are thinking about an alternative - asking them to fast for one day a week. "The size of a policeman's belly has a bearing on the crime rate. Unfit policemen have no place on the force. There is no way they can chase criminals if they can't even walk properly," Allahabad's superintendent of police R K Vishwakarma told the Jagriti newspaper. One officer said: "It's rather unfair to be forced to shed fat after working round the clock. It's all well to talk of the crime graph going up but why doesn't anyone think of giving us some rest?" A police spokesman said: "We're sympathetic to their problems but these guys are supposed to be tough. A little load-shedding can make life that much easier for them." 1st February 2002 |
