| Thief 'anaesthetises victims' Police in India are hunting a thief who apparently robbed inmates of a women's hostel after knocking them unconscious with an anaesthetic. Twenty students of Lady Irwin College in New Delhi are reported to have slept through the night, and late into the next day, before being woken with buckets of water. They then discovered items had been stolen such as cash, tape-recorders, alarm clocks, perfume, hair dryers, clothes and even sanitary towels. Navyug newspaper quotes one of the victims saying: "There was also a strong pungent odour in the air which leads us to think the thief put us to sleep with an anaesthetic." The thief is said to have left their underwear on a bush outside the hostel. College principal Satinder Bajaj said: "The girls are obviously in a state of shock." A police spokesman said: "It is tempting to believe that an insider could have done the job but we are not about to dismiss the possibility of a smart and resourceful burglar being able to put the girls out of action.
