| Holidaymakers outraged as plane diverts for celebrity golf clubs Holidaymakers aboard a flight to Portugal were diverted so the plane could pick up golf clubs for celebrities. The Air 2000 flight from Gatwick was 30-minutes into the journey when the pilot announced he was diverting to Manchester. Some of the passengers were concerned there was a terrorist threat, but discovered the aircraft was collecting 63 bags of golf clubs for celebrities taking part in the Jimmy Tarbuck Classic tournament. Police were called to the flight following angry protests from some of the 233 passengers and one man was removed from the plane, reports The Times. A spokeswoman for Air 2000 said: "Passengers were not told the flight was being diverted until it was in the air because we hoped to get the clubs on another flight. But we couldn't. This was the first flight to Portugal until Thursday." The two-and-a-half hour flight arrived five hours late. Passenger Sarah Chard, from Hampshire, said: "It was incredibly distressing. We thought something terrible had happened. Quite a lot of people just burst into tears." A spokeswoman for the Association of British Travel Agents said: "I have never heard of anything like this happening before and we would not expect it to happen again." 4th February 2002 |
