| Restaurant owner killed in brawl A man has died after a "major disturbance" at a restaurant in London. Police were called to the scene in Southall on Saturday night, and found the owner of the restaurant and a member of staff with serious injuries. Restaurant owner Imtiaz Hussain Syed was pronounced dead an hour after the brawl which is thought to have involved up to 20 people. Mr Syed and the other victim, both aged in their early 40s, were taken to a west London hospital after the incident which took place at about 2315 GMT. The second victim's condition was described as "critical", after he sustained serious head injuries. Police were still at the scene in The Broadway, at the junction of Townsend Road, on Sunday. Chief Superintendent Peter Goulding, Ealing borough commander, described the attack as "brutal". He said: "This was a seemingly unprovoked attack in full view of a number of customers." "This not only resulted in the two victims receiving injuries, but also a substantial amount of damage being caused," he said. A Metropolitan police spokesman added that shortly after arriving at the scene of the incident, officers had pursued a number of suspects thought to have been involved. He said seven men were later arrested. They are being held in custody at a number of police stations in the area "We are keeping an open mind regarding the motive at this early stage," the spokesman added. A post mortem on Mr Syed was being carried out on Sunday. Officers at the scene have seized a number of weapons, which may have been used in the attack and were trying to trace any further suspects. "If anyone witnessed this attack or believes they have information about who was involved, please contact the police," added Mr Goulding. 21st January 2002 |
