| Mobile phone clue in rape A man accused of the rape of a German teenager was caught as a result of a mobile phone, a court has been told. Michael Phillips was arrested at his Brighton home after detectives found the mobile at the scene of the rape. Lewes Crown Court heard that the mobile was registered to Mr Phillips' mother at the house they shared at Plymouth Avenue, in the Bevendean area of the city. Mr Phillips denies two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and one count of robbery. The court heard that the 18-year-old victim, a student, was told that she would be killed if she screamed. Prosecutor John Price said the girl, who cannot be named, was attacked on 16 July last year as she walked back to her English host family in Brighton after a night out with friends. She was grabbed from behind on an area of open grassland she had used as a shortcut. Her attacker threw her on the ground and searched her handbag before raping her. The court heard she was then led to a children's' playground where she was sexually assaulted and raped for a second time. The girl ran to the house she was staying at to raise the alarm, and the father of the family went to the scene of the rape where he saw a man searching the area with a torch. But he disappeared along an alleyway. The court was told that detectives conducting a fingertip search of the area discovered the mobile phone. When it was examined by an expert, it revealed that the user was Gwen Pollard, the defendant's mother, and that phone numbers stored in its memory included the number of the family home. Mr Phillips was arrested that evening. Mr Price said: "She was subjected by him to an horrific ordeal. "He grabbed her, clamping his hand around her mouth. He threw her to the floor and held her down. "She was told that if she screamed he would kill her." He said he had a gun. The trial continues. 21st January 2002 |
