| Doctor 'assaulted naked teenager' A gynaecologist conducted an intimate examination of a teenager as she stood naked with her hands against a bedroom wall, a court heard. The woman, who is now 36, cried as she told Sheffield Crown Court how Paul Vinall visited her home in Leeds in December 1981, when she was 16-years-old. She said she had been suffering from severe abdominal pains and Vinall had been summoned for a private consultation as part of her parents' health plan. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the court how the doctor took her to her parents' bedroom and then asked her mother to leave. She told the court: "I was told to take everything off. It was very embarrassing and I was a little bit scared." Asked by Paul Worsley QC, prosecuting, why she did it, she replied: "Because I just assumed that that was what I needed to do and I just did what I was told." The woman told the court Vinall then examined her abdomen on the bed before asking her to stand up. She told the jury: "Mr Vinall asked me to stand up and face the wall and then asked me to open my legs. Mr Vinall then examined me while I was up with my hands against the wall." The woman continued: "He then examined me from behind, intimately. "I remember he was either kneeling down or crouched down behind me because he was lower than me." Asked by Mr Worsley how she felt, she said she was "frightened". She told the jury she later had to have one of her ovaries removed which had become infected. Once the surgery was over she then went to see Vinall on a number of other occasions for follow-up consultations. The woman said he always made her strip naked, even for a smear test. Vinall, 55, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist who worked at various hospitals and private clinics in Yorkshire, including Leeds General Infirmary and Wharfedale General Hospital, Otley, denies 31 counts of indecent assault on 22 patients between 1981 and 2000. The trial continues. 21st January 2002 |
