| Murder accused's 'weakest link' jibe A jealous husband who strangled his wife was recorded on tape shouting the television quiz show catchphrase "You are the weakest link, goodbye". But as Richard Cooper killed his wife, Theresa, she could be heard saying: "Chris, I will always love you". The last minutes of Theresa Cooper's life were revealed at Maidstone crown court where Richard Cooper, 40, from Tunbridge, Kent, is charged with murdering his 46-year-old wife in Gillingham. He has pleaded not guilty to murder. John Hillen, prosecuting, said the tape recorder was voice-activated and had been bought by Mr Cooper who suspected his wife would return to her former lover, Christopher Sindall. Mr Cooper left the device taped underneath a table when his wife met Mr Sindall at her flat. Mr Hillen said: "Once in the flat Theresa Cooper got changed while Christopher Sindall made some coffee and there took place an act of intimacy, a sexual favour between her and Christopher Sindall. "They sat afterwards and talked about the complicated personal triangle they found themselves in." Later Mr Cooper returned to the flat and retrieved the tape machine, said Mr Hillen. He then went to a pub and played it over and over again, becoming more and more angry because he could not hear much although his imagination filled in the course of events, said Mr Hillen. After drinking at the pub Mr Cooper went back to the flat which belonged to his wife. Mr Hillen said: "What he did was kill his wife. Whether by chance or by design the recorder was in his fleece pocket, it was there and recording while the defendant killed his wife. She "dared" him to play the tape and Mr Cooper attacked her, as the machine recorded him shouting: "You are the weakest link, goodbye". Mr Hillen said the dictation machine revealed some thumping noises and then went quiet. The trial continues. 23rd January 2002 |
