Midwife 'indecently assaulted' by doctor

A midwife put a gynaecologist's unusual examination technique down to a "consultant's idiosyncrasy", a court heard.

The nurse said she had been "fooled" by Paul Vinall into allowing herself to be indecently assaulted by him during ante-natal check-ups. Sheffield Crown Court was told Mr Vinall, 55, ordered the nurse, who he was seeing as a private patient, to get down on all fours so he could give her a breast examination.

The consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist who worked at various hospitals and private clinics in Yorkshire, including Leeds General Infirmary and Wharfedale General Hospital, Otley, denies 31 counts of indecent assault on 22 patients between 1981 and 2000.

The NHS midwife, now 40, from York, told the jury she had visited Mr Vinall privately in 1987 when she discovered she was expecting her first child and he agreed to see her for free. The court heard she lost her son a week after his birth at Leeds General Infirmary in 19 February 1988, but returned to Mr Vinall during her second and third pregnancies.

She told the jury Mr Vinall examined her breasts each time and "more so" than she would expect. When she questioned Mr Vinall he said it was "better to be safe than sorry" she said. When Nicola Davies QC, for Mr Vinall, suggested the examination had not been carried out, the midwife, wiping away tears, said: "I totally disagree, I'm not here for my benefit." She added: "I should be at work. I wouldn't put myself through this hell just to tell loads of lies."

The court heard she reported the matter to police after hearing, from her mother, that investigations were going on into Mr Vinall.

The trial continues.
