Car rams police motorcyclist

A police motorcyclist is recovering after a BMW driver deliberately rammed him in Birmingham city centre.

West Midlands Police said PC Vaughn Lowe, 30, narrowly avoided serious injury when he jumped clear of his motorcycle. He was treated for bruising and neck strain at City Hospital in Birmingham and is now recovering at home.

The driver, who had crossed a red light, reversed into the officer after stopping his car. PC Lowe was on routine patrol on the A34 Newtown Row at 1830 GMT on Tuesday when he spotted the BMW cross a red light. He signalled for the car to stop, but it drove off at high speed towards Dartmouth Circus. The vehicle continued into Dartmouth Middleway before the BMW stopped at the junction with Heneage Street and reversed at the officer.

The silver-coloured, Y-registration car, which had a female Asian passenger, sped off again towards Ashted Circle. Detective Chief Inspector Laurence Dyer said: "We believe this was a deliberate act." "It is a very disturbing incident which could have had far more serious consequences."

Police are appealing for witnesses who have any information on the incident to contact them.
