Woman, 81, attacked with hammer

An 81-year-old woman has been attacked by two men, one of them wielding a hammer.

Detectives have described the attack on Freda Cook at her home in Shelford Bottom, in Cambridgeshire, as "terrible". Miss Cook said the men forced the front door of her house and demanded any money in the house. She said: "I tried to keep them out but they came in and grabbed me by the throat and shook me like a terrier shaking a rat."

Miss Cook said she was hit on the head with the hammer "at least a dozen times". Detective Constable Susie Hine, from Cambridgeshire Police, described the attack as "sick and terrifying".

Miss Cook was speaking after spending two days in hospital. She said: "One of them grabbed me and pulled me up and twisted my arm. "I don't scream often but I certainly screamed then. It was really agony." The pensioner said she had never seen "such vicious people".

The pair kept shouting at her demanding more than the £30 or £40 she handed over in pound coins. Detective Constable Hine appealed for help in tracing the two men. "I am sure that someone knows who is responsible for this attack. "All I can say is that they do not deserve your protection. Attacking an 81-year-old lady in her own home is a sick and terrifying crime and they must be punished for it."
