Damages sought after liposuction

A diabetic who had liposuction to remove a lump caused by injecting insulin has told a court the procedure left her unable to have sexual relations.

Stephanie O'Neill, 42, of Bedlington, Northumberland, told the High Court sitting at Newcastle, the scarring prevented her from feeling comfortable with her body. She also claims that the scarring means she is only able to walk short distances and suffers from a stoop Ms O'Neill is seeking £100,000 damages from Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust for for the scarring she suffered, psychological problems, loss of income and the cost of care.

She told the court: "A woman likes to feel feminine while in bed and I don't. "I cringe when my partner even puts his hand over my stomach. He tries to convince me it doesn't matter. "I know I push him away, that's my problem to deal with."

Ms O'Neill underwent an operation at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Hospital in October 1996. She was due to have a small amount of fat removed from her stomach along with a lump in her thigh, but a locum surgeon cut right across her abdomen in a procedure known as a full abdomino plasty.

Ms O'Neill claims the large scar left her unable to enjoy sexual relations, as well as causing pain and leaving her only able to walk with a stoop. Outside court, the claimant's solicitor, Vanessa Ashton, said Ms O'Neill was claiming around £100,000 damages for the scarring and psychological problems. She also said the problems led to her giving up her job as a clerical assistant.

The solicitor said that Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust, which is defending the claim, had offered "much less than that figure". Ms Ashton also said that her client needed the NHS treatment only as a result of being diabetic.

The case was adjourned until next month when Judge Christopher Walton will hear further submissions from both sides.
