Aston Martin forced to ditch 'racy' merchandise designs

Aston Martin has been forced to ditch racy merchandise after US parent company Ford complained about its connotations, it is reported.

The firm has been ordered to withdraw handcuff keyrings and leather underwear because of the sex and bondage links.

According to the Financial Times, designers have been ordered to produce a more restrained collection of branded goods.

Nearly 4,000 customers received catalogues featuring handcuff belts, perforated leather boxing shorts and denim suede boxers.

Recipients included Edsel Ford, a member of Ford's founding family, who is said by the paper to be a "keen churchgoer" and to have been outraged at the racy nature of the merchandise.

One Aston Martin executive involved in the project says the dispute went to the heart of cultural differences between Ford and its luxury brands. He was quoted as saying: "On the one hand you have a go-ahead multi-brand, international company and on the other a very blue-collar, conservative car maker from Michigan. This shows the Michigan side has won out."
