| One dead in bus crash A 66-year-old man was killed and a woman injured when a bus ploughed into a shop in Greater Manchester. The single decker bus was travelling along Elliot Road in Tyldesley when it hit the empty building at 1040 GMT on Friday. Emergency services took the driver to hospital where he received treatment for shock. The dead man was a pedestrian. The injured woman, also a pedestrian, was taken by ambulance to Royal Bolton Hospital for treatment for minor injuries. Ruth Howard, owner of a baby clothes shop, next to the accident site said: "A single-decker bus careered across the road and smashed into the shop next door. "There were two pedestrians on the pavement at the time. We heard a woman scream and then heard a bang. "It's a terrible tragedy." Mrs Howard said six people were on the bus. "There were four adults and two children and they were all shaken but fortunately unhurt." Robert Bleakley, ward councillor for the area and a member of Wigan Council's transport authority, said: "It's a tragedy and I think we need to find out exactly what caused the accident. "I hope the bus company will have a thorough investigation and I am sure the transport authority will have as well." A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police told BBC News Online the bus driver was also treated in hospital. South Lancashire Transport refused to confirm if the bus involved in the crash belonged to the company and refused to make any further comment. 26th January 2002 |
