Man jailed for family's abduction

A man who armed himself with three knives before threatening and kidnapping a woman and her three children has been jailed for nine years.

Vincent Buckley, 35, from Cheltenham Street, Oldham, Greater Manchester, admitted four counts of kidnap, one count of aggravated burglary and one count of the unauthorised taking of a car.

Buckley broke into a house in Cooper Street, Oldham, early on 17 October 2001, Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester heard on Friday. The 42-year-old woman heard someone moving about downstairs and was confronted by Buckley holding three knives. He demanded money and jewellery before forcing the woman and her daughter, aged 20, to load computer equipment into their car. Buckley ordered the pair and the woman's two sons - aged eight and 12 - into the car and forced her to drive for 45 minutes before he escaped. The victims cannot be named for legal reasons.

After the hearing Detective Chief Inspector Martin Bottomley said: "This was a particularly nasty crime which has had a major impact on the lives of the family involved, two of whom are only children. "Vincent Buckley is a serial criminal who has a number of convictions for aggravated burglary, burglary and theft.

"I hope the length of today's sentence will serve as a deterrent to other criminals." The 20-year-old daughter said: "The effect that night had on all our lives is difficult to put into words. "We couldn't return home for nearly six weeks and are still suffering today. "I suffer panic attacks and flashbacks and haven't yet returned to work full-time since the incident. "Both the boys have trouble sleeping now and their schoolwork has started to suffer. We have all been deeply affected by this."
