Man drove Pc over ravine

A motorist who rammed a police car - before driving over a ravine with a police officer hanging out of his window - has been jailed for four-and-a-half years at Cardiff Crown Court.

Twenty-six-year-old Lee Parfitt from Brynmawr, south east Wales, admitted driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, and inflicting grievous bodily harm on the police officer. The court heard Parfitt had 133 previous convictions - including 29 for dangerous driving and another nine for driving while disqualified - even though he had never held a driving licence.

The court was told Parfitt put Pc Blair Jones life at risk after a 60mph chased ended when his car plunged down a 20 foot ravine at Garnlydan off the A465 Heads of the Valleys road in south Wales Prosecutor Ieuan Morris said: "Pc Blair Jones and a colleague spotted him in a red Ford Escort van swerving onto a pavement. "The officers followed five car-lengths behind at speeds of up to 60mph in a 30mph zone before blocking him in on a mountain track. "Pc Jones ran to Parfitt's van and opened the passenger door trying to remove the keys from the ignition.

"Parfitt accelerated, dragging Pc Jones fully into the car. He drove at 30 or 40mph down a 20 foot embankment," Mr Morris said. The officer was off work for almost two months with a bruised back and whiplash injuries. Mr Morris said Parfitt had "persistently flouted driving bans" after his first motoring offence at the age of 14. "He has been convicted 29 times for driving while disqualified and nine times for dangerous driving."

Defending, Colin Davies said Parfitt had panicked, knowing his history of offences and his former heroin addiction would work against him if he was caught. Jailing Parfitt, Judge John Griffith Williams also banned him from driving for 10 years.
