| In brief... Police hunt missing cashier Detectives are searching for a cashier suspected of stealing £172,000 from the bank where he worked. Mark Griffiths, 24, has not been seen since 27 December when the cash was discovered missing from an unattended safe at a branch of Lloyds TSB, in Bermondsey, London. A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said Mr Griffiths of Vange, Basildon, Essex failed to turn up for work the next day and had not been seen since. Mr Griffiths is described as 6ft tall, stocky and with short dark hair. ================================================== Prayers for quake victims Temples across London and the South will be holding prayers this weekend on the first anniversary of the Gujarat earthquake in western India. Millions of pounds have been raised for the victims of the quake, which left thousands of people dead and many more facing starvation. The money raised is still being used to re-develop villages that were devastated by the disaster. The quake occurred on 26 January 2001. ================================================== Costly racism inquiry An inquiry set up to examine a police investigation into a police sergeant cost nearly £200,000. Asian sergeant Gurpal Virdi was wrongly sacked after being accused of sending racist hate mail four years ago - he was subsequently reinstated. The overall cost to the police of pursuing the case against him, including legal fees and compensation payments, has been estimated at more than £1m. The latest report followed a 14-month inquiry commissioned by the Metropolitan Police Authority and cost £194,944. ================================================== Boat owners help search The parents of a teenage fisherman, who went missing on New Year's Day, have called on boat owners to help in the continuing search for him. Daniel Nolan has not been seen since late on 1 January, after he had been fishing with friends on the River Hamble, Hampshire. Although it is feared he has drowned, his parents have refused to give up hope he will be found alive. They will spend this weekend searching the local waterways in the area, just outside Southampton. ================================================== Paedophile clinic decision due Campaigners who have been protesting about the location of a clinic for paedophiles are waiting for a decision on whether it will move. The Home Office was due to rule on Friday whether the Wolvercote Clinic in Surrey will move from Epsom to Chertsey. The clinic offers long-term residential treatment for sex attackers, or those alleged to have carried out crimes of this nature Protesters hope the Silverlands Hospital, Chertsey, the government's favoured location, will become its new home. ================================================== Cocaine seized on ship Cocaine with an estimated street value of £640,000 has been seized from a ship moored in Hampshire. Customs officers said on Thursday 10 kilograms of the drug were found by a sniffer dog during a search of the vessel Santa Maria at Portsmouth docks. The vessel was part of the weekly banana boat service from the Windward Islands in the Caribbean. Two crewmen, aged 38 and 48, were arrested in connection with the drug find, said a customs spokesman. 26th January 2002 |
