| In brief... Two remanded on murder charge A man and a teenager have appeared in court charged with the murder of a furniture salesman who was kicked to death just two days before Christmas. Andrew Cowie, 20, of Harley Rise, Bramley, Leeds, and a 17-year-old youth from the Bramley area were charged with the murder of Robert Hanson on 23 December. The pair, who also face charges of robbery, were remanded by magistrates in Leeds to appear before the court on Tuesday. Mr Hanson, 43, from Salford, Greater Manchester, was discovered unconscious on a footpath near the Wickes DIY store in the Bramley area of Leeds. He died of severe head injuries. =============================================== Police have arrested a man and a young woman in connection with a road accident in Greater Manchester in which a 25-year-old woman died. The pair were arrested on Saturday following the accident just before 2400 GMT on Friday. The woman died after a white ford sierra collided with her on Castle Hill Road in Hindley. The road remained closed on Saturday. =============================================== Investigation after railway death An investigation is underway after a woman was killed when she was hit by a train in Stockport. The accident happened at Shaw Heath at about 1400 GMT on Friday when the woman was hit by a Penzance to Manchester train. Emergency services were called to the scene and services were disrupted while the body was removed. The identity of the dead woman has not yet been revealed. =============================================== Metro drivers threatening to strike The Tyne and Wear Metro system could be the latest rail service in north east England to be hit by strikes. Aslef, the train drivers' union, has called for a series of one-day strikes over pay. The union says it has earmarked 4, 12, 20 and 28 February as days when industrial action will take place. Nexus, which runs the Metro system, said it was disappointed by the strike threat, as arrangements for a further meeting had been made for next week. =============================================== Serial sex attacker jailed for life A sex attacker who assaulted three prostitutes and kept them prisoner has been given a life sentence. David Blunn was told by the judge at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday that he indulged in a "perverted exercise of power control". One of his victims suffered two skull fractures but managed to open the lid of his car boot and escape. Blunn, of Toxteth, Liverpool, admitted three counts of indecent assault and false imprisonment and one of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. =============================================== Skinned sheep's body hung from tree A number of sheep have been victims of a brutal attack at a farm, with one animal being skinned, gutted and hung from a tree. The grim discovery was made at Fenwick Grange Farm at Flashley Carr Lane, Moss, near Doncaster in the early hours of Thursday. The farm has pedigree sheep used only for breeding. Two were killed and three were badly injured. Two sheep were shot in the nose with a pellet gun and a third was shot in the throat with a 2.2 calibre weapon. =============================================== Remand prisoner dies in jail A 20-year-old remand prisoner has died after experiencing breathing difficulties just hours after arriving in jail. Gavin Barraclough asked his cellmate at Doncaster Prison to raise the alarm in the early hours of Thursday. Mr Barraclough, who was from the Leeds area, had been placed in the prison's detoxification unit on his arrival at Doncaster on Thursday evening. A Prison Service spokeswoman said prison nurses called an ambulance and helped paramedics attempt to resuscitate the inmate, but he was pronounced dead by the prison doctor at 0320 GMT. 26th January 2002 |
