| Red light web guide probed AN ONLINE guide to Northamptons Red Light District has been investigated by police chiefs, following claims the site is encouraging kerb crawlers to visit the town. The web guide features a virtual map of the area, pinpointing street corners used by the prostitutes, and a comprehensive review of the services on offer. Surfers can log on to find out the best places to meet girls and how to avoid police officers cracking down on the illegal night time trade. Det Insp Allan Law of Northamptonshire police said: We are aware that, sadly, prostitution does still exist in Northampton and it is important that we continue to monitor the situation. As long as prostitution exists there will be people looking to highlight the services on offer but we have looked at this website and it does not contain any illegal material. The kind of people visiting these sites could well be those who are thinking of coming to the town anyway so it is unlikely to be directly responsible for any increase in the number of kerb crawlers visiting Northampton. Our main priority is the welfare of residents and we will continue to mount a number of high-profile operations in the ongoing battle to keep a lid on activity in the area. The Chronicle & Echo has received a number of angry letters from local residents who are worried at the rise in kerb crawlers in the area. One letter from an anonymous reader stated: Northampton is establishing itself as the seedy street sex capital of the Midlands. Kerb crawlers are a real problem, keeping residents awake until the early hours with noisy vehicles and slamming doors. The most effective solution would be to make some residential streets no through roads to vehicles so kerb crawlers cant follow the routes they have established. Sex customers regularly swap information regarding the towns Red Light District using online message boards. Contributors on one board have recently tipped off fellow kerb crawlers about what is believed to be undercover police surveillance in the area, identifying the vehicles involved in the operation.
