| Vice ring mastermind must repay £70,000 THE mastermind behind Northamptons infamous Thai prostitution racket has been ordered to hand over £70,000 in profits he made from the sex trade. Pensioner Ron Miller, who was the ringleader in the global smuggling operation which stretched as far as Australia, Canada and America, will now have to pay back the cash after a confiscation order was imposed at Coventry Crown Court. Detectives from Northamptonshire Police joined forces with legal experts from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the global crime fighting unit Interpol and law enforcement agencies in Thailand as part of Operation Twilight. The investigation has so far netted more than £100,000 which members of the smuggling gang will have to pay back to the Government via the courts. The cash was held in accounts in both the United kingdom and the Kingdom of Thailand. But during an earlier court hearing, it emerged that 66-year-old Miller had made up to £800,000 from the conspiracy. Dc Paul Beck said: This case is regarded as one of the most significant prosecutions of organised human trafficking criminal syndicates yet investigated in the United Kingdom. Criminals involved in human trafficking are put on notice that their illegal profits, wherever held in the world, will be located and seized. Miller was one of five people, including his ex-wife Angela and their son Don, who admitted being involved in the Thai smuggling racket. Scores of women from the Far East were brought into Britain via Heathrow Airport and Eurostar trains to work in the Kingsley Park Terrace brothels, the Siam Sauna and Thai House. It is understood that the CPS had attempted to win an order to claim back a significantly higher amount of profits from Miller. But a CPS spokesman said: This is the culmination of work by all the criminal justice agencies, and if someone has made money through illegal means they will have to pay back that cash. The jury considered these people guilty of the offences and we have followed the case through to this conclusion. We are pleased with the outcome. Miller was sentenced in September 2000 to four years in jail for his part in bringing Thai women to Britain to work in two Northampton brothels. His 44-year-old ex-wife, Angela, of Cavendish Drive, Langlands, was today still on the run after she failed to turn up for a sentencing hearing at Northampton Crown Court. She was given a prison term of three-and-a-half years by Judge Richard Bray in her absence. Wednesday, January 09, 2002 27th January 2002 |
