| Children's referee 'chased by five men after sending-off' A 19-stone football referee has been chased around a pitch and threatened by five men after sending off a player in an under-11 game. Eamon Doherty says he was chased after sending off a young Droitwich player in their game with Areley Kings on Saturday. The situation is reported to have calmed down when the parents from the home team, Areley Kings, intervened. The Express and Star reports the youngster had been sent off for kicking an opponent and repeated swearing. The sending-off, a minute before half-time, resulted in the Droitwich manager ordering his players off the pitch and the abandonment of the game which Areley Kings were winning 2-1. Mr Doherty, 31, said he tried to explain his decision to the five but they followed him to the dressing room. He said: "I was gobsmacked. I am a big, burly bloke myself, but they were all big and I thought I was going to be hit. It was very frightening." Mr Doherty is to report the incident to the Worcestershire FA and Areley Kings is demanding it should be awarded the points rather than have to play a re-arranged game. Martin Stokes, manager of Areley Kings, said: "The referee was correct in what he did because he had already warned the boy about swearing and then the lad blatantly kicked one of our players and started swearing again. The amount of abuse the referee received from parents was terrible. They were setting an awful example to young boys." Wayne Oliver, manager of the Droitwich team, refused to comment. 28th January 2002 |
