| In brief... Man in court over fairground deaths A man charged with manslaughter over a fairground accident in which two people died has been sent for trial at crown court. Narelle Cozens, 28, and Michael Lawrence, 24, were killed after a chair split from a ride and crashed into a kiosk at Shepherd's Bush, west London, on 27 May 2000. Barry Ramsey, 52, of Swan Lane, Wickford, Essex, appeared at West London Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with two counts of manslaughter. Mr Ramsey is also charged under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 in relation to his inspection of a Supertrooper ride on 5 May 2000, in Ilford, and in relation to his inspection of another Supertrooper on 24 May 2000, in Watford. =============================================== US police chief visits London The New York police chief who pioneered "zero tolerance" tactics is in London to give a talk to the country's most senior police officers. Bill Bratton, whose strategies helped cut crime in the Big Apple by a third in the mid 1990s, has been invited by the Home Secretary, David Blunkett. Both men will lecture the 43 chief constables of England and Wales at the Home Office. They will be looking at new initiatives to tackle crime. =============================================== Compensation for racial harassment An Asian engineer who suffered racial harassment and discrimination while working for London Underground has been awarded £93,000 in compensation. Jarwaid Khan, 47, from Barking, east London, won his case at an employment tribunal after complaining that he was the victim of racial abuse. Mr Khan, who has been off work with stress for over a year because of the harassment, was criticised by a manager for seeking help from his union. London Underground said in a statement: "As a result of the case we have reviewed our procedures and introduced new anti-harassment procedures to avoid a similar situation from occurring." =============================================== Senior officer committed for trial A senior police officer has been committed for trial on allegations of perverting the course of justice and misconduct in a public office. Superintendent Ali Dizaei, 40, appeared at Horseferry Road Magistrates Court in central London. District Judge Christopher Pratt said Mr Dizaei would appear at the Central Criminal Court in relation to those matters on 18 February. Mr Dizaei also faces eight counts of alleged false accounting and will appear before Bow Street Magistrates Court on 19 February on those charges. =============================================== 'Suitcase' man in court A man appeared at the Old Bailey accused of the murder of a woman whose body was found in a suitcase. Kyu Soo Kim, 30, from Holborn, central London, is charged with the murder of Hyo Jung Jin, 21, a South Korean woman whose body was discovered near York. He will appear for a plea and directions hearing at the Old Bailey on 25 March. He was remanded in custody until then by the Common Serjeant of London Judge Peter Beaumont. 29th January 2002 |
