A man has been attacked on the doorstep of his home by a gang armed with a machete. Police believe neighbours who went to the aid of the 40-year-old man probably saved his life. The attack took place in the Harborne area of Birmingham on Monday night. The victim suffered a serious wound to his left arm and was taken to hospital.

Parents voice road concerns
Protestors in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, say they are concerned about plans to build a major road next to a school in the town. Campaigners said children's lives might be put at risk by the road, which will pass close to St Peter's School. But Nottinghamshire County Council claim the link road to the A617 will mean 5,000 fewer vehicles a day on nearby residential streets. A public inquiry into the road project opens on Tuesday in Mansfield.

Cricket club destroyed
Arsonists have attacked a cricket club in Rutland for the third time in less than a month. The Oakham Cricket Club was first set on fire in the early hours of New Year's Day when the club's pavillion burned down, destroying all the club's photographs and memorabilia. Two weeks later another fire ruined the equipment store and much of the groundskeeping machinery. In the latest attack on Saturday, the scorebox was set on fire - now club officials say they will have difficulty getting the club ready for the cricket season in April.

Toddler's head stuck in loo
A mother called in the fire brigade when her 23-month-old son got his head wedged in a toilet seat. Abigail Davies, of Chesterton, Cambridge found she could not budge the child's seat from the head of her son Ethan. Mrs Davies tried washing up liquid, baby oil and cream, before taking the little boy to Cambridge fire station. Firefighters Rick Hylton and Clive Pettit used a hacksaw to cut the seat from Ethan's head and sent him home with a fireman's helmet as a souvenir.
