| Killer in van watched dying victim Detectives believe the killer of a Black Country businessman drove round his victim's car to check he was dead, before driving off. Martin Sylvester, 34, was shot at close range in the chest as he sat in his BMW outside the business he owned in the Wednesbury area. Known locally as the "Cat", police acknowledge the former boxer probably had enemies who held a grudge against him. Mr Sylvester, was shot just before midnight on 21 August last year in Pikehelve Street in Wednesbury. He was outside the road haulage business he owned when he was shot. He managed to drive a short distance before crashing. Police have revealed they are anxious to trace the owner of a white Toyota Hiace van which can be seen on CCTV footage captured in the area. They believe the van, registration N854 SAX, was driven by the killer, who then circled Mr Sylvester's car before driving off. Detective Inspector Iain O'Brien, of West Midlands Police, said: "We believe the van driver was checking the crash scene to establish whether Martin Sylvester was dead or not. "That was a pretty callous thing to have done." Mr O'Brien added: "He was well-known in Wednesbury, a local businessman who was apparently quite hard-working. "He was loved and respected by his family but there's no doubt some people did not like Mr Sylvester and probably had grudges against him." 30th January 2002 |
