| Valentine singles night cancelled due to lack of interest from men An Edinburgh restaurant has cancelled a Valentine singles night after 500 women expressed an interest compared with only two men. Stockbridge Restaurant wanted to help single people find love by seating three men and three women at each table. But owner Juliet Lawrence Wilson has now cancelled the evening because of the poor response from men. "We had well over 100 phone calls and a lot of them were for groups of three or so people. We had one group of around 10 nurses - so it couldn't have been far off 500 women who wanted to come," she told the Evening News. "Their attitude was that it would be fun, rather than they would meet someone special. Valentine's Day is usually so boring for single people. They weren't desperate women, they were just looking for a good night out. "A couple of men phoned but they were more serious. They wanted to come on their own and seemed more interested in meeting someone. I think men have this idea that a night like this would be uncool. I don't think women mind people knowing they are single. "We're a bit disappointed because we thought we'd get so many more guys than girls - after all, they'd have a room full of single women. But I think maybe men take themselves too seriously these days." 30th January 2002 |
