Detective accused of court antics
Police are investigating allegations that a detective sat through a crown court trial shaking his head and mouthing the word "liar" as the defendant gave evidence to the jury.

Northumbria police were ordered by trial judge Mr Justice Henriques to investigate the behaviour of Detective Constable Tony Joyce whose alleged antics alarmed jurors.

The jury at Newcastle Crown Court was sitting in the trial of 32-year-old taxi driver Mohammed Haq, of Benwell, Newcastle, who was cleared of an indecent assault charge.

Mr Justice Henriques has asked Northumbria Police to look into the allegations with a view to disciplinary proceedings being brought and said he wanted to be informed of the outcome of the inquiry.

The child, born so recently she still had parts of the umbilical cord attached, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for a check-up although initial tests suggested she was in good health. The woman, who has not been named, was traced after police received a call from a member of the public. She is now receiving medical treatment and will be spoken to by officers.
