| In brief... Appeal court increase jail term A teenage heroin addict from south Wales who robbed a 73-year-old man after breaking into his house had his two-year sentence more than doubled today at the appeal court. Stephen Murphy, 18, from Barry, was given the sentence after being convicted of robbery at Cardiff Crown Court last September and pleading guilty to burglary. Three judges at the appeal court in London increased his sentence to five years after accepting arguments from the country's top law officer, the attorney general, that the two years was "unduly lenient". The judges said seven years would have been the appropriate sentence to mark the gravity of the offences. But, as Murphy was having to endure the "double jeopardy" of, in effect, being sentenced for a second time, the court fixed his new term at five years. ==================================== Man arrested over ambulance handsets Police in south Wales have arrested a man in connection with the theft of handsets from the ambulance service. Officers from Swansea took the 18-year-old man into custody on Friday. Detectives also recovered a number of items of ambulance property. An appeal had earlier been made for information about stolen ambulance equipment. 1st February 2002 |
