| Husband convicted of killing wife An airport worker who killed his wife and then claimed she died during a bondage sex session has been convicted of murder. The jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court took five hours to find 42-year-old Mark Goddard guilty. Judge Frank Chapman told him he would receive a life sentence. Goddard, from Cannock, Staffordshire, told detectives marks found on his schoolteacher wife's neck could have been caused by erotic-asphyxiation. He said his blindfolded wife, Kerry, fell to her death through the floor of their loft during a sex game on 29 March 2001. But Christopher Hotten QC said this explanation was untrue and aimed at covering up his attack on her at their five-bedroom home in the village of Heath Hayes. Mr Hotten told the jury: "Why he killed her, what the motive was, what triggered this attack, we cannot say and do not have to prove." Mrs Goddard's body was found after she failed to pick up her children from a local childminder Her husband was working at Gatwick Airport when he was informed of the death. Instead of returning to Staffordshire, he withdrew £400 from a cash machine and drove to Scotland. He was arrested on 1 April driving his car on the M6 in Cumbria. Post mortem tests showed some of the injuries on Mrs Goddard's body were caused by blunt force. The 36-year-old music teacher worked at Landywood Primary School, in Great Wyrley. The couple had three children who are now being cared for by Mrs Goddard's parents. In a statement released by Staffordshire police Jim and Marjorie Roberts said: "She was a wonderful daughter who loved her family. We miss her dearly." 1st February 2002 |
