| Man dies after lift plunge A man has died after falling more than 40ft down a lift shaft in a block of flats. Police said Craig Casement had been trying to climb out of the lift after it apparently got stuck between floors. Another man was able to escape to the floor below - but the 22-year-old victim fell after losing his footing. The accident took place in the early hours of the morning at Glencairn Tower in Motherwell, Lanarkshire. A police spokesperson said Mr Casement, of Castle Street, Motherwell, and another man in his twenties had been in the lift shortly before 0200 GMT. "It would appear that the lift stuck between the third and fourth floors," said the spokesperson. "The two men managed to open the lift door and attempted to climb down onto the third floor. "The man in his twenties made his way to safety. "However, it would appear that the 22-year-old man lost his footing and fell down the lift shaft a distance of 40 to 50ft - resulting in him sustaining serious injuries." Mr Casement was taken to Wishaw General Hospital by ambulance, but died a short time later. "At this stage there would appear to be no suspicious circumstances," added the spokesperson. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal. The Health and Safety Executive has also been informed and will carry out a full investigation. 3rd February 2002 |
