Britain's only female Sumo has no one to fight

Britain's only Sumo wrestler is facing her biggest challenge - finding other women to grapple with.

Twenty stone Jackie Bates can only get bouts by travelling abroad. Jackie from Derby is appealing for more women to get involved in the sport. Meanwhile she is practicing with male Sumo wrestlers.

Mum of one Jackie, 46, told The Sun: "I'm fed up with slamming into blokes twice the size of myself. It's a great sport and there must be women out there who like it."

Jackie, who is 5ft 7ins, has spent thousands travelling up to five times a year to bouts in Europe and Japan. She is dubbed the British Bulldog. She wears the traditional Sumo thong over a leotard. Jackie added: "In this country Sumo wrestling is seen as grotesque, especially where women are concerned. "But in Europe and Asia it gets huge crowds. I know a few good moves, including a deadly throat hold.

The women I fight against in Japan are usually smaller than me - but they are fast and vicious. "And they are not shy about whacking you in the face."

"When you get two women weighing between 17 and 25 stone crashing into each other at a hell of a speed you don't want to get caught up in the middle. It's like two double- deckers coming together at full throttle."

A spokesman for the British Sumo Federation said: "It would be great if we got a few more women to join."
