| In brief... Police investigate death Police are investigating the discovery of the body of a 36-year-old man in Portsmouth. Detectives who were called to an address in the Milton area say they are treating the death as suspicious. A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out on Monday. ================================= Park and ride protest A group of Winchester residents are going to the High Court in London to challenge plans to build a park and ride facility on meadows near the city. The meadows were given to Winchester several years ago in compensation for the bypass being built. But with traffic congestion increasing in the city, Hampshire County Council now wants to extend Winchester's park and ride scheme over the meadows. ================================= Debt-collector murder A man has been charged with the murder of a 36-year-old woman found dead at a block of flats in Portsmouth on Friday night. Tony Whiting, 22, a care worker from Cosham, is due to appear before Portsmouth magistrates on Monday. A 46-year-old woman was arrested but released without charge. A post-mortem examination showed that mother-of-five Michelle Adams, who was working as a debt collector on the night of the attack, died of head injuries. ================================= Clerk jailed over theft spree A bank clerk who stole £800,000 during a lengthy game of "financial ping-pong" has been jailed for four years. Lloyds TSB staff member Faye Johnson, 39, used her good reputation, her intricate knowledge of the banking system and excellent memory to stay one step ahead of discovery for 13 years. Southwark Crown Court heard that Johnson was caught last year during an internal audit but by that time, the mother-of-one from Wavertree Hill, Streatham, south London, had pocketed a total of £802,000. Johnson, who admitted one count of theft, remained motionless in the dock as she was sentenced. 4th February 2002 |
