| I Don't Believe It! Victor Meldrew's catchphrase voted best ever Victor Meldrew's famous catchphrase "I don't believe it!" has been voted the best ever comedy slogan. The One Foot In The Grave catchphrase gained twice as many votes as Del Boy Trotter's "lovely jubbly" in a poll of Radio Times readers. In the same survey Steptoe And Son were named best sitcom double act. Victoria Wood won two categories - best sketch show for As Seen On TV and top TV stand-up comedian. A total of 2,500 readers of Radio Times selected their favourite programmes, moments and characters from television comedies from the 1950s to the present day. The poll ties in with the Summer Nights of Comedy season throughout August on UK Gold, which is sponsored by Radio Times. The full results are published in this week's issue of Radio Times. As the best slapstick sitcom moment, Radio Times readers chose Basil Fawlty's gourmet night duck a l'orange, disguised as a blancmange. They also voted the Two Ronnies' Fork Handles scene the best sketch. Del Boy Trotter is considered the best male sitcom character, with The Good Life's Margo Leadbetter winning the female sitcom character category. Angus Deayton was judged the funniest presenter on television for Have I Got News For You, while The Mrs Merton Show was rated the best satirical show. Lenny Henry's Chef! was voted the worst sitcom. 21st August 2001 |
