Football fans reject Wembley revamp

More than two-thirds of football supporters are in favour of abandoning Wembley. They favour building the new English national stadium at a new site outside the capital.

A poll carried out by the Football Supporters' Association found that fans would prefer Birmingham over Wembley. Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the FSA, says the survey results reinforce a unanimous vote against the famous north-west London venue by the organisation's members earlier this year.

"This confirms the view taken by people at our annual conference when we debated a realistic alternative to Wembley," he said. "We think a new national stadium shouldn't necessarily be in London. That was carried unanimously and, in fact, there wasn't a single supporter who stood up and spoke in favour of Wembley."

A total of 1,037 supporters completed the survey, published on groundguide.rivals.net and came from the majority of English football clubs. They were asked: "If there is to be a national stadium, Birmingham looks like being the only serious alternative to Wembley. Which of the two would you prefer as the location of a national stadium?"

In reply, 344 people or 33.17% said Wembley while 693 or 66.83% said they would prefer a new stadium in Birmingham, on a green-field site near the M42 and the National Exhibition Centre. Most fans say they would also be happy for cup finals, playoffs and other games to be played at Cardiff's Millennium stadium or another suitable venue if no stadium were to be built.
