Most women 'want cannabis legalised'

A survey says more than 80% of young women want cannabis legalised. The Company magazine poll found that 36% of women between the ages of 18 and 28 think the drug should be decriminalised completely.

Results said 48% think it should be legalised but only for medicinal purposes. The survey, which interviewed 1,000 women aged 18 to 28, also revealed that 46% of those questioned had tried the drug. Company editor Sam Baker said: "This is just one of many surveys that prove people from all walks of life now make a distinction between cannabis and Class A drugs.

"It's about time the Government got in line with public opinion and accepted that cannabis should be decriminalised." She said the magazine had decided to publish the figures from a wider survey looking at the lifestyle of women in their "freedom years" - the time before many get married and have children. She said: "We decided to publish our findings because we thought it was a really interesting statistic - we were surprised to get such a high figure."

A breakdown of the survey also showed that women aged 18 to 21 were more likely to have tried the drug (53%) and older women, aged 26 to 28, were more in favour of legalising cannabis for medicinal purposes (53%).
