Survey reveals Stoke is 'worst place to live' in England and Wales

A new lifestyle survey suggests Stoke is the worst place to live in England and Wales. Researchers found Stoke has high unemployment, low incomes, poor schools and relatively high crime rates.

Council leader Barry Stockley told the Daily Express the findings ignore the area's hospitality, warmth and "world-famous skills". Researchers did say Stoke has its plus points - notably the Hanley shopping centre which offers "one of the best retail experiences in the West Midlands."

The top five locations listed in the survey are Uttlesford, in Essex, the Malvern Hills, South Norfolk, West Oxfordshire and Derby. Sandwell, Waltham Forest, Gateshead, and Barking and Dagenham joined Stoke in the bottom five.
