Women tops at trivia test

Women win the battle of the sexes when it comes to trivia but are more modest about their abilities, a new survey indicates. Female participants are more likely to get the answers correct when more than 500 people - half men, half women - were asked a series of 10 questions.

The survey, conducted to launch the Cassells Beacons range of pocket encyclopaedias, found only 10 people got all 10 of the multiple choice questions correct. Women did better on six of the questions while men scored more highly in the remaining four.

And overall correctly answered more of the questions - which ranged from the proportion of sugar in tomatoes to the height of Claudia Schiffer - than men. Among the questions which women did better with were the number of cups of tea the average person in the UK drinks each year, with 53.9% estimating it was 2,000 with just 45.3% of men doing the same.

Women in the survey were found to be more frequent viewers of the TV quiz shows The Weakest Link and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and were more likely to own an encyclopaedia, the survey found.

Men were far more confident about their abilities with 48.6% classing their general knowledge as a excellent or good, where as only 38.2% of women claiming the same. Indeed nearly 4% of women described their knowledge as hopeless.

Here are the 10 questions in the survey:
