MP wants to know how often colleagues go to the loo

An MP has been asking members of the House of Commons how often they get out of bed to go to the toilet. Dr Howard Stoate wants to draw attention to the problems of benign prostate disease. He surveyed 159 male and 20 female MPs.

The chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Men's Health found half the men went to the toilet at least once a night compared with 35% of the women. Of those aged between 50 and 59, 61% of male MPs got up at least once and 13% were up twice or more, reports The Independent on Sunday. The Labour MP for Dartford is warning some colleagues they could be suffering from prostate disease. He said: "Too many men are leading miserable lives because they know too little about this disease."

A number of MPs have supported an early day motion welcoming the publication of his report, Out of the Water Closet - It's Time to Tackle Benign Prostate Disease.
