British drivers ready to go green

British drivers are preparing to do their bit for the environment by switching to smaller cars, according to a new survey. Of 13 European nations, only the Swiss are more happy about using smaller vehicles than the British. UK road users, however, still lag behind many continental drivers when it comes to applying other green principles to the roads, the survey found. Britain is in last place of the 13 countries for driving with incorrectly-inflated tyres or unnecessarily burning rubber.

In overall driving behaviour linked to the environment, Britain lies in sixth place behind Germany, Belgium, France, Austria and Spain, the independent study commissioned by tyre company Goodyear found. Britons also use their cars the most behind Norwegians, while Italians use their vehicles the least.

Scandinavians, apart from the Finns, appear to be the most environmentally aware - especially the Swedish, who are even prepared to pay extra taxes to help the environment. The Dutch are among the best when it comes to environmental knowledge and score well in terms of energy-saving behaviour. The survey divides drivers interviewed into five types: show-off, adventurous, responsible, social and functional.

Britain has more than its fair share of adventurous drivers compared with the European average (14% to 9%), and fewer responsible drivers than the Euro norm - (16% to 21%).
