| Majority of football fans want National Stadium in Birmingham A survey suggests most football fans want the National Stadium to be built in Birmingham. Researchers at the University of Leicester say 60% of fans want the stadium in the city. The researchers, who questioned 2,000 fans, say 29% are in favour of Wembley and 11% want Coventry. They polled fans from 43 Premier League and Football League clubs. The survey also suggests 59% of fans would be more likely to attend England games if the National Stadium moved to Birmingham. Head of research, John Williams, says: "When directly comparing Birmingham and Wembley it is clear that the majority of supporters favour Birmingham." A decision on the National Stadium is expected by the end of October. 19th October 2001 |
