| Heavy women earn less, finds study. A new study suggests thin white women earn more than heavier ones. The US study of white working women has found the heavier they are the less they earn. Researchers found a difference of 65 pounds produced the same wage gap as one year of education would. The same relationship between weight and income has not been found in Hispanic and Black working women. More than 1,400 women took part in the study carried out at Cornell University. John Cawley says his research suggests weight lowers wages, but he claims it is not evidence of discrimination in the workplace. "Another hypothesis also consistent with these findings is that heavier workers are less productive at work," he said. "It has repeatedly been found, for example, that obese workers are more likely to miss work due to illness." But he admits there is a lack of evidence for this from the non- white groups. 19th October 2001 |
