| Northerners are biggest complainers Consumers in the north of England are the biggest complainers when it comes to shoddy goods and services, according to a new survey. The National Complaints Culture Survey, published by global training consultants TMI, reveals more than half the consumers in England regularly voice their disapproval at poor services. The top gripers are northerners of whom two out of three make complaints all or most of the time. Consumers in Scotland and Northern Ireland are less likely to kick up a fuss than their English counterparts. By region, the percentage of consumers who complain is: North (65%) East Midlands (55%) North West (53%) East Anglia (50%) South East (49%) Yorks and Humbs (48%) Scotland (46%) West Midlands (45%) South West (45%) Greater London (45%) Northern Ireland (33%) Wales (29%) The survey, carried out in conjunction with the Institute of Customer Service, reveals British men are more likely to gripe than women, while the over 50s are the biggest complainers. It shows there has been a 12% increase in the number of complaints made throughout the UK over the past year. It also reveals two-thirds of people believe Britons are getting better at complaining and that under-21s are the least likely to make a fuss. Meanwhile, e-mail complaints have risen 350% on last year. It also reveals only one in four employees feel qualified to deal with complaints and only one in three are trained to deal with such situations. 25th October 2001 |
