Report confirms rise in web use after terror attacks

A report confirms people turned to the web in record numbers last month. Web statisticians Nielsen Net Ratings report that news services in particular experienced extra traffic following the US terror attacks. CNN drew 430,000 more visitors in September than it did in August, while Ananova's audience grew by 38%.

BBC Online attracted 300,000 extra visitors, while the FT.com's audience grew by 30%. The study confirms that search engine usage also grew last month. Google, AltaVista and AskJeeves all showed figures above the internet average.

Another Nielsen finding indicates that many travel sites drew more visits than usual in the clamour for details about delayed or cancelled flights.

September also saw a sudden rise in the number of people using the web in the UK. Nielsen point out that the rise does not correspond to a growth in the number of new connections - they suggest this indicates that many Britons who do not normally use the internet did so last month.
